Meditation for Emotional Optimization

Meditation for Emotional Optimization (M.E.O.)

In these environments, the patient will find themself outdoors surrounded by nature, either outside a temple, on a mountain meadow or in a canoe on a lake. The natural  environments are intended to create a calm, safe and relaxing space conducive to relaxation and meditation away from stressors. The healthcare professional can rotate between the specific environments in successive sessions to encourage engagement. The VR scene has a Tutorial Phase intended to train the patient until proficiency is achieved and then to proceed to the full phases. After the patient achieves proficiency in the tutorial phase, the patient can move to the full image processing. The ultimate goal is for the patient to internalize the protocol so that he/she can practice outside of session as needed.

VARIABLES SETTINGS

The configuration variables will allow modifying the environment to suit each patient and each phase, be it the evaluation or the treatment phase. For this, you will have the same configuration variables available, explained below:

  • Gender
Choose between a male or female body. A neutral body is selected by default.
  • Skin tone
Choose the skin tone that best represents your patient to enhance the feeling of immersion.

The clinician should explain that the process is intended to release images and emotions held in mind in order to feel relief. The patient and clinician can then choose the topic and time period in life to be released during the interview session.  Initially, the Tutorial phase is repeated until proficiency is achieved and the patient understands the process sufficiently to continue to the Full Relaxation and Release phases.

Events

The mental health professional can launch the events in a specific order depending on the objectives of the session.  All events will be launched one after the other if they are not selected in a specific order.

Introduction:

The patient will be comfortably seated in the selected environment and can look around to take in the details of the environment like the weather, nature sounds, colors or objects. Then the audio will explain the process of M.E.O. and the reasons for practice.

Relaxation Tutorial:

  • While seated, the patient will see an animated face in front of them and will follow the squeezing and releasing of the face while listening to the instructions to progressively squeeze and release different muscle groups.
  • Next, the patient will be instructed by the audio to begin Square Breathing by looking at a square shape in front and following inhaling, holding, exhaling and resting for 4 seconds each at the same pace as the animation.

Body Release Tutorial:

  • The audio will direct the patient to look down at their avatar hands and see the fingers from the right to the left hand converting and dissolving into energy in order of thumb to little finger.

Image Release Tutorial:

  • The patient will think of an image and visualize it mentally and, as if to dissolve it, with the help of the audio guide, will release it by means of a countdown. At the end of the scene, the patient will see some images and select (with eye gaze) the fire icon to make each one disappear.

Full Body Relaxation:

  • While seated, the patient will see an animated face in front of them and will follow the squeezing and releasing of the face while listening to the instructions to progressively squeeze and release different muscle groups.
  • Next, the patient will be instructed by the audio to begin Square Breathing by looking at a square shape in front and following inhaling, holding, exhaling and resting for 4 seconds each at the same pace as the animation.

Full Body Release:

  • The patient is now instructed to look down and see their avatar feet and legs. The feet and then the legs will start to change to moving energy as blue waves which will extend upwards to the top of the head.

Center of the Universe Journey:

  • Once the patient indicates that they are ready to teleport, energy lines become visible in front and beams move upward and the perspective changes and there is a sensation of moving up and looking down at the earth’s oceans and continents below. Next, the patient is beamed into the universe with a black hole and prepared for the full image release exercise.

Full Image Release:

  •  Instructions appear in front to release distressing  images from their mind of the day, week, month and other time periods into the black hole patients  can send their image memories to the black hole by eye gaze selecting the fire icon in front of them. Once they are done with the image release, they cue, by eye gaze, the green button to continue or the red repeat. When the exercise is done the last selection will return the patient to the present time.

Recommendations for use

Over recent years there has been growing interest in educational health information: that is the delivery of useful and accurate information to patients regarding mental health, situations they are going through or symptoms they may be experiencing. Educational environments can be used in a variety of contexts. You, as the healthcare professional, decide how to use this content through the Virtual Reality tool.
